LPG BTU to kWh converter: kg of LPG, MJ, kWh and MMBTU

Convert LPG weight to energy units and back, and estimate how much LPG a burner uses at its rated heat input. Heating value is editable.

Convert LPG energy: kg, MJ, kWh, BTU and MMBTU

1.0000 kg of LPG equals about

LPG:
1.000 kg
Energy:
46.00 MJ
Electric units:
12.78 kWh
British units:
43,599 BTU
Gas-bill units:
0.04360 MMBTU

How much LPG does a burner use?

A 3.00 kW burner for 2.0 h at full flame uses about 0.47 kg of LPG (0.23 kg per hour; 6.0 kWh of heat). Real use is lower if the flame is turned down.

Estimate only. This converts energy units using the heating value above. It does not include appliance efficiency, flame setting or heat losses, and it is not a safety or sizing check. Use the burner's rated heat input, not its electrical or other rating.

Results are rough planning figures from the numbers you enter and the assumptions shown. They are not a quote, a measurement, an engineering design or a safety check. For a written price send a request; the gas rate follows the OGRA notification (confirm the month on file when you order) and delivery and cylinder terms are confirmed before you agree.

The first three factors are fixed unit definitions. The last three depend on the heating value you enter.

When this is useful

  • Comparing LPG with natural gas or diesel on the same energy basis
  • Turning a burner or heater rating into kg of gas per hour
  • Reading a gas bill in MMBTU and seeing the kg of LPG that carries the same heat

Frequently asked questions

How many kWh are in 1 kg of LPG?

About 12.8 kWh of heat at a planning value of 46 MJ/kg (46 / 3.6). The exact figure depends on the propane-butane mix.

How many kg of LPG are in 1 MMBTU?

About 22.9 kg at 46 MJ/kg, because 1 MMBTU is about 1,055 MJ. Use this to compare LPG with natural gas billed in MMBTU.

What is BTU?

A British thermal unit is a small unit of heat energy, about 1,055 joules. Burner and heater ratings are often given in BTU per hour.

Is appliance efficiency included?

No. The converter changes units only. Real fuel use also depends on how efficiently your appliance turns gas into useful heat.

How do I turn a burner rating into kg per hour?

Use the burner's rated heat input (not an electrical label), convert to MJ per hour, then divide by the LPG heating value (default 46 MJ/kg). The calculator does this when you enter BTU/h or kW.
